Many clubs follow the Japanese/Okinawan
tradition of doing a kneeling
bow when they come into the
dojo. This is fine however
if space is tight your students
can create a 'bottle neck'
effect when trying to get
to class.
Students
will come into class, step
onto the dojo floor and then
kneel almost immediately.
This is fine for one or two,
but when a group of students
come in, they can inadvertently
block the doorway preventing
other students and parents
from entering.
A
practical way to handle this,
and still stay with the tradition
is to tape off a section along
the dojo floor that is an
acceptable place to do the
bow.
If
this is done away from the
main entrance door then you
can remove the congestion
that occurs when groups of
students kneel for the bowing;
and maintain the traditional
ceremony which is normal practice
for many Uechi-ryu dojo.
