Just before I head outside to brave the *ahem* waters of central Alberta….(okay so I am heading to the grocery store for Lobster)…. I wanted to post a short message.
Happy Mother’s Day from everyone here at the Journal!

We don’t live in the a quiet 19th century English countryside…
We live in the real world, unfortunately where it seems things can be more dangerous. I was reading through the news reports this morning and an article struck a chord with me.
For those who know me personally you are aware of my passion for realistic training, real world protection. In our modern world we have the protection of the police, 911, video surveillance cameras at every roadside…are we any safer?
Do most people still practice for real confrontation (are schools teaching it?) or as a society have we been conditioned to feel ’safe’ in our community?
I read this article from the Telegraph (UK Newspaper) basically stating that their CCTV system was useless to help detect crimes.
More practice with Konchin I guess….maybe the stories of master’s non-stop training has some bearing even today?
Imagine that….

Over the past couple of years the Newsletter membership for the Uechi-ryu Journal has grown considerably; so much in fact I have had to change programs to run the mailing list.
Because of this I ask you to go to the main page of the Journal (click here) ; on the left hand side of the page please re-enter your first, last name and email to be added to the new program.
I was going to do all this manually however I thought it best to make sure everyone opt’s in on their own.
Sorry for the inconvenience, you will like the new content I am sure!
Train hard;
Scott

I regret to inform you all that Sensei John VanDeLaare passed away at approximately 5:10 am this morning, Sunday April 20th. He gave no signs before he passed and went very peacefully. Thank-you to everyone who expressed concern and well-wishes or came to visit. Cremation has already been arranged, but a visitation will be held both in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek for those who wish to attend.
I will have more details as to places and times when plans are finalized. I know John meant a lot to many of you and has had a great impact on many in the martial arts. He will be sorely missed. His family and I wish that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice House in Battle Creek for all of the wonderful care they gave him in his last days. I hope as many of you as possible will make it to one of the visitation/memorial ceremonies.

Rick Wilson sent the following message, definitely worth passing on:
Rory is a long time correctional office in the USA who has posted a lot on Van’s forum over the years. A great deal of solid real violence information.
I think the book will contain some down to earth insights from a guy who faces the real bad guys every day at work.
I pre-ordered mine and thought you guys might find it interesting.

The quote below came from a newspaper interview with Japanese seniors of a TMA.
While the article was mostly concerned with tournament scores and names of competitors some older seniors were interviewed regarding their system. They are all 9th and 10th Dan in a newly-formed association that recently broke away from the parent association.
In this translation, the system and interviewees are left unidentified.
After reading the passage, do you think this represents a positive developmental trend, the erosion of a classic system and values, or just the “course of nature”?
Please comment with your opinions; here is the quote…
In Europe and other places in the world, there is too much fear of
legal problems and lawsuits. They cannot train as we do here. They have business karate.

I received an email from Evan Pantazi the other day and I thought I would pass it on. Having attended on of Evan’s seminars in the past I know that many Uechi-ryu students are interested in his approach to presure points using Uechi-ryu Kata.
Evan also has an online training program which can be accessed here: www.uechi-ryu-journal.com/kyusho
I am writing to you to let you know of an exciting event in Sydney, Australia this May 17th & 18th.
I am honored to be presenting Kyusho at the Supershow this year in a different perspective, one that will show you the incredible possibilities for your Martial Art, Health and Wellness, Business and how it can benefit your daily life.
It would be a great time to see some of you again, meet some of you face to face that I have only been privileged to communicate with via email and discuss real Kyusho and how it can help you personally. I will also have a free gift for you as a small token of my appreciation for years of friendship.
All the information will be found at this website: www.amisupershow.com or you can contact them at: info@amisupershow.com Phone: 02 9824 0054.
Also please email me to let me know if you will be there.
Good Health!
Sincerely,
Evan Pantazi
